NY Comic Con:

Friday:
-So many things to do! So many things to see! So little time! Mostly I wandered around with [profile] xturncoatxiii, [personal profile] iambickilometer, and [livejournal.com profile] eerisedda.
-I met Jim Cheung! He signed comics for me! I got mistaken for his wife which resulted in us going around all weekend saying "Jim Cheung's wife? A horse." (I am sure the real Mrs. Cheung is a wonderful lady, these comments are in no way representative of my feelings towards her.)

Saturday:
-Scott Snyder signed issue 1 of American Vampire for me. We chatted for a few minutes and he promised to get back to me about taking that course with him. (He taught me creative writing my freshman year of college before he broke into comics.)
-Rafael Albaquerque also signed American Vampire. Also he drew me Nightwing and it was awesome.
-I picked up a whole bunch of comics for very very cheap including the first volume of Fables, a gazillion issues of Air and The Unwritten, Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America, and an Iron Man omnibus.
-/Co/ meet-up that I tagged along with [profile] xturncoatxiii and [personal profile] iambickilometer to. Geekery was had by all.

Sunday:
-Oh. My. God. Bendis signed The Confession for me. And also Avengers Prime #3. We almost didn't get his signature, but he was nice enough to stay a little bit longer than his signing event was scheduled for.
-Jim Cheung drew me Patriot! Eli is secretly my favorite Young Avenger.
-Chris Giarrusso who draws Mini-Marvels drew me Hawkeye! ahdsljfs When HAWKEYE throws his mighty ARROW-- also he said next week he's putting up an animation to go along with that song on his website.
-Art Baltazar (of Tiny Titans) gave me a doodle of Guy Gardner! My only regret is that I didn't ask him to draw Star Sapphire!Guy.
-[livejournal.com profile] cap_ironman meet-up was fantastic and everybody was great. Also now I have new fandom friends I can watch cool stuff with! Brb rolling around clutching my face with glee.
-Down side: my camera lens broke and I have to take it in to get a quote for the repair and I really can't afford this right now. But it's a really nice camera and it would be stupid to just get rid of it so I might as well get it over with. /headdesk

I just picked up a shift tomorrow from 9am-6pm. Oh boy. Did I mention I have more homework than God to do for Tuesday? Um, yeah. Fuck.

And finally, I give you the following quote from [personal profile] iambickilometer who is crashing at our apartment for NYCC: "Oh, if you have to drunk tomorrow then you probably shouldn't get work."

On Porn

usullusa: Tony Stark (Marvel: Tony Uh actually...)
Something caught my attention while everybody was discussing the fail and more fail that was the J2 fic set in post-earthquake Haiti.
A lot of people seem especially angry that a writer appropriated a foreign culture and an enormous tragedy for the sake of porn. Now. Appropriating the disaster for any reason that makes light of the enormity of the situation is terrible. Misrepresenting an entire race and culture is terrible. It is incredibly upsetting that somebody decided to make the deaths of thousands of people, particularly PoC, the backdrop for a completely unrelated story about two white guys. But the fact that it was porn is not in and of itself bad. I am frustrated by the tone that I've seen people take implying that the porn makes it even worse.

I just want to get this out there:

Porn. Is. Not. Bad.

There is nothing about porn that is inherently bad. Yes, porn can be degrading. Yes, porn can be insulting. But so can everything else. There is nothing inherently bad or crass or demeaning about porn.
Porn is part of our sexuality. Pornographic creative work can be just as beautiful, transgressive, creative, and brilliant as anything else. And it can be none of these things too. It can be nothing but dirty, sweaty fucking. And that is just a good. Porn doesn't need to be art to be valuable to us. It doesn't need to be couched in poetic language in order for it not to be insulting and crass. It just is and nobody should look down on it. By looking down on porn you are looking down on normal, healthy human desire. Plenty of people love porn, are even vocal about it, but still see it as being less or in some way unsuitable.

I am tired of being told that I need to be ashamed of my desires. I am tired of being told that I am sullying the subjects of porn. I am tired of porn being looked down on.

I am surprised to find in fandom of all communities anybody implying that porn has a particular quality of being degrading.

Again, I am not saying that the recent J2 fic is not insulting and out of line. There are so many problems with that fic. But pornographic content is not one of them. A story about Jared and Jensen searching for the meaning of life in Haiti would be just as offensive as a story about Jared and Jenson's epic love and boning.

  • The oil spill continues to be horrifying and out of control, despite BP's assurances.
Oil estimate raised to 35,000-60,000 barrels a day
Government scientists Tuesday increased the estimate of oil flowing into the Gulf of Mexico to between 35,000 and 60,000 barrels per day, up to 50 percent more than previously estimated. That translates into 1.5 million gallons to 2.5 million gallons per day.

Obama addresses the nation on the oil spill from the Oval Office
    Gems include:
Tomorrow, I will meet with the chairman of BP and inform him that he is to set aside whatever resources are required to compensate the workers and business owners who have been harmed as a result of his company's recklessness.
And this fund will not be controlled by BP. In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must and will be administered by an independent third party.

Now, one place we've already begun to take action is at the agency in charge of regulating drilling and issuing permits, known as the Minerals Management Service.
At this agency, industry insiders were put in charge of industry oversight. Oil companies showered regulators with gifts and favors and were essentially allowed to conduct their own safety inspections and write their own regulations.
And so Secretary Salazar and I are bringing in new leadership at the agency: Michael Bromwich, who was a tough federal prosecutor and inspector general. And his charge over the next few months is to build an organization that acts as the oil industry's watchdog, not its partner.

  • Meanwhile, the FDA says our seafood is safe. I don't know about you, but I find this hard to believe. I am a firm believer in the marvels of modern medicine, but there are all kinds of things we can't scientifically prove. And it seems perfectly clear to me, regardless of what any scientist may say, that eating animals that have spent weeks in oil-polluted waters is a terrible idea.

  • Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword trailer. I am excited by this trailer because a. yay moar Zelda! b. it acknowledges the retelling, adding on to, and evolution of the Zelda story which is exactly the kind of thing that gets my academic penis hard.

  • [livejournal.com profile] furiosity on claims that having to not be offensive is ruining fandom.

Edit: She's safe and sound. Thanks to [personal profile] torachan for the link.

  • Meanwhile, State-side, we have a report of increasing acceptance of gay and lesbian individuals.
For the first time, the percentage of Americans who perceive “gay and lesbian relations” as morally acceptable has crossed the 50 percent mark.

  • Much to my shame, I never finished watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. But I have been remedying that in the past few weeks. Slightly spoilery )

  • I've been meaning to put together a bunch of links regarding the oil spill, but somebody has already beaten me to it. Here's a brief overview of the situation. In addition, have some photos of the damage, and a ray of hope: the government has opened criminal and civil investigations regarding the spill. At least people will [hopefully] be held accountable. No definitive word on whether or not an end is in sight though. (Last two links via [livejournal.com profile] cheetahkeys)

  • Apparently there have been many complains that Obama isn't doing enough on the LGBTQ front. I haven't heard much of this, although I have heard complains that Obama isn't keeping his promises on DADT and equal marriage rights. But anyway, here is a very heartening list of the many ways Obama has been fighting for our rights. He's been especially great about trans rights, given the current track record. (Please note that I don't necessarily agree with all the opinions voiced in this essay). via [livejournal.com profile] rm

  • Sushi Cat. You will explode of adorable.

  • Been watching White Collar. This show is turning me onto dom/sub so hard. Also Neil. Neil is my favorite ever. After Chrestomanci. And Caius. And- I have a thing for poncy, smartass, gay-ish gentlemen, can you tell?

  • I HAVE AN ARC OF DRAGONSOUL BRB DEAD FOREVER. Thank you to Jen who is my favorite person in the entire universe.

Hey all. As I'm sure you've heard, there's been a magnitude 7 earthquake in Haiti and a lot of people are in desperate need of help. [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti is a fandom auction for the Haiti relief effort. People are offering fic, art, hand-knit items, beta services, tarot card readings, cookies, fanvids, graphics, and all kinds of other cool stuff. These are hard times for everybody, but if you have a little bit to spare please bid on something, or offer something up for auction or even just help spread the word.
There is also a list of charities up on [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti that you can simply donate to if you don't want to participate in the auction.
You can also text "HAITI" to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross. The charge will appear on your next phone bill.

EDIT: Having actually taken this now (and feeling infinitely unhappy afterward) and reading a discussion on the topic http://ogi-ogas.livejournal.com/681.html, I don't really encourage you to take it. Just from taking it I can tell you that it's written by people outside fandom who haven't taken the time to understand fandom and especially not the diversity of those in it. A lot of the things they say in the discussion are problematic, but don't take my word for it. Check it out yourself. S'all I have to say for now.
