Ugh

Phone conversation with my mother:

Her: Somebody saw the picture of you I carry and said you look like a queen.
Me: Ah. Cool.
Her: ... It was a guy, actually.
Really? Really? Can you possibly be any more passive aggressive?

*later*

Her: May I ask what you are wearing?
Me: no jeans and a tshirt...
Her: Yes but are you dressed like a woman or... somebody who has no sex?
Me: ... I'm wearings jeans. And a tshirt.
Her: Yes but you have lots of clothes. You have women's clothes and you have... other clothes.
Me: I AM WEARING JEANS AND A TSHIRT I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE YOU WANT FROM ME

I am so angry and upset and stressed out about everything. I went to sleep at dawn on the couch after crying in the dark for an hour. And slept through a phone call from the GAP about my store credit card and I can't call them back because I don't have my account number.

If somebody wants to cheer me up about now, it would be much appreciated.

  • OH MY GOD REPUBLICAN PARTY, TODAY I HATE YOU SO HARD
Quoted from Organizing for America: In his opening statement, Barton, the top Republican on the committee overseeing the oil spill and its aftermath, delivered a personal apology to the oil giant. He said the $20 billion fund that President Obama directed BP to establish to provide relief to the victims of the oil disaster was a "tragedy in the first proportion."
    WHAT. WHAT. WHAT?

  • CNN caught onto the race fail that is Hollywood. I wish I was surprised to see them actually debating whether or not it is okay to cast white actors in roles that call for PoC. But I'm not. Oh CNN, I have a whole bunch of links you should read...

  • I saw Karate Kid today. It is fantastic. I don't have the energy to review it properly, but it is really good. I am really impressed with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. (brb fanboying Jackie Chan forever). I highly recommend it.

  • Interdisciplinary classes. My college does exclusively interdisciplinary courses, and it works very well, but something I do feel a bit like this.

White House sends BP a $69 million bill.
The Obama administration is making BP financially responsible for the cleanup of the oil spill in the Gulf. While this is only secondary to the actually issue of stopping the oil flow and cleaning up, I'm glad that BP isn't getting off without additional consequences and leaving the burden on American residents.

Also, Obama in response to accusations that he doesn't care/isn't upset enough.
"I would love to just spend a lot of my time venting and yelling at people, but that's not the job I was hired to do," Obama said. "My job is to solve this problem and ultimately this isn't about me and how angry I am. Ultimately this is about the people down in the Gulf who are being impacted and what am I doing to make sure that they're able to salvage their way of life."

On a different note, here's some photos of what the oil spill is doing to our wildlife.

It's looking like all of BP's short-term fixes are failing. We may have to just wait until the relief well is finished in August and hope for the best.

  • Canvasing is making me hate everybody ever. Grassroots Campaign is currently working on behalf of the ACLU and one of the pulls that we use is "Do you have a minute for gay rights?"
Do you know what I get at least half the time from people?
    "No, I'm fine."
NO YOU'RE FINE? NO YOU'RE FINE? I KNOW YOU'RE FINE. BUT I'M NOT. I am so happy to hear that while millions of people are being treated unfairly at best and beaten and murdered at worst because of their sexual orientation, you are fine. Do you know what I hear when I hear "No, I'm fine."? I hear "I've never had to worry about being discriminated against because of who I love a day in life, so no I don't really care. I am so comfortable in all my cushy privilege and that's all that's really important to me."
    Jesus christ rage.

  • The "Top Kill" plan, which involved pumping some kind of sludge into the pipes to block the flow of crude oil has failed. In case anybody had any doubts, the explosion was caused by negligence and BP willfully cutting corners, in the name of saving money of course.

  • A college education with a private university is increasingly becoming a luxury. It boggles my mind that something as basic as an education is a luxury only for the very rich or those willing to drown in debt. Is this how America rewards its young people for working hard? By making college inaccessible?
I am one of the lucky ones. Although a degree from NYU is far beyond my means or that of my family, my father's employer happens to have a program which pays for part of my tuition, on top of some other lucky breaks my family has caught. Basically, somebody like me from a middle to upper-middle class family is only able to attend a private university through sheer luck.

  • Is the Malawi Couple Gay? via [livejournal.com profile] rm. This is really important. The couple in Malawi that was sentenced to 14 years of hard labor for being openly gay is not actually a gay couple. Tiwonge Chimbalanga is a trans woman and this fact has simply been erased by our news sources. No no no, they are not gay. Tiwonge Chimbalanga is a woman. This doesn't make what happened to them any less appalling, but it also makes our reporting on the issue appalling.

  • After rigorous scientific scrutiny, I have come to the conclusion that this man is a real live wizard. What the shit. This is so cool and yet terrifying.

  • [livejournal.com profile] sparkindarkness has a really great entry on how DADT is damaging the ability of the United States armed forces to work cohesively with other countries' troops and how it makes even soldiers from other countries feel unsafe.

  • SO TIRED OH GOD MY JOB SUCKS

Okay, I swear book reviews are coming up soon (I need to finish The Pinhoe Egg), but humor me.

I HATE MY MOTHER SO MUCH RIGHT NOW JESUS CHRIST.
It has been nothing but backhanded passive aggressive comments from her. I UNPACKED MY SUITCASE AND FOUND SHE HAD SNUCK A RAZOR INSIDE WITH A NOTE ABOUT HOW SHE LOVED ME AND HOPED I WOULD "COME BACK". AHSDJHALSDJA
Which explains why, as I was walking out the door, she said to me "by the way you look much better in Victoria's Secret". BECAUSE SHE WENT THROUGH MY SHIT. AND JUST. WHAT. It's none of your fucking business what I wear or don't wear or how or why or ANYTHING ELSE. ARGH.
The whole weekend was like that. I made the fucking mistake of stumbling into the bathroom still in my underwear and ended up catching an earful for not shaving my legs. Oh yes and my hair is wrong. (It was fine for years but now it's not for mysterious reasons that involve her being BATSHIT CRAZY) Oh yes and my skin, which is totally my fault and not because I have been stressed as all fuck GEE I WONDER WHY.

The razor was the last straw. I want to punch her forever.

I WANT TO STAB MY PARENTS IN THE FACE.

WHAT KIND OF SICK TWISTED FUCKS TELL THEIR KID THAT THEY WILL NEVER, UNDER ANY TERMS, ACCEPT THEM. EVER.

BY THE WAY I JUST GOT AN EMAIL FROM MY FATHER CITING FREUD, FREUD AS PART OF HIS RANT. I HAVE DEEP PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS WHICH I MUST ENDEAVOR TO FIX. HOMOSEXUALITY IS A SIGN OF DEEP ISSUES AND HE IS SURPRISED THAT AS SOMEBODY INTERESTED IN ANTHROPOLOGY I HAVE NOT UNDERSTOOD THE EVIL DEVIANT ROOTS OF HOMOSEXUALITY.

ALSO ONLY REAL MEN AND REAL WOMEN CAN HAVE REAL SEX.

ALSO FUCK THEM.

FOREVER.

I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO ANGRY IN MY LIFE.

Too much

I was going to blog about LJ's most recent trans fail. But then I spent a while being subjected to my roommates' phone conversation in which she called things "retarded" and made homophobic comments. And I've thinking all day about how my parents have kindly informed me that either I "change" my sexuality or they're through with me. And all I can say is that the world is full of so much fail it's overwhelming.

By the way [livejournal.com profile] sparkindarkness does a way better job of explaining LJ's bullshit and why it's not okay than I ever could anyway.

Nebraska Law Sets Limits on Abortion

YOU MAY NOT PUT YOUR LAWS ON PEOPLE'S BODIES
I know a lot of people that were almost aborted. My own family urged my mother to abort me. I have heard this used as an argument for placing bans and/or restrictions on abortion. I am not convinced. Even though I almost never existed, as did several of my friends, I wouldn't change a thing. There are a million reasons for why a person might want to abort a fetus and nobody gets to decide which are valid and which aren't. Nobody gets to decide how a person uses their body except for them!

And can I just say that the majority of the people making these laws are cis men. That's right, how many of them have had to consider the possibility that their bodies are not their own in the most literal sense? That they can suddenly find their body taken hostage by a fetus and that they might not be able to stop it at all. Or that their partner can walk out at any time, leaving them with the biggest responsibility life can offer them? (Which isn't to say that women don't abandon men with the responsibility of a child, but societally it's much more acceptable and common for men to do so.)

Fine, you wouldn't get an abortion. I get it. Don't force others to make the same decision as you.

And who gets to decide when a fetus gains person-hood anyway? In that case, we might as well just stop using protection altogether since you're preventing a potential new life. There is no scientific test we can conduct. There is no magic number. All we can do is leave the decision up to the person that's pregnant.

And the first person who says that all these problems can be solved by giving up unwanted children for adoption is getting punched. There are countless reasons why that is not an option for people. And they still have to be pregnant. I realize I am biased but I hate the idea that the people making these laws have probably never considered the realities of being born into a female body.

Apologies for whatever fail may be included in this entry. It's 4:21 am and I can't think beyond RAEG.
