  • Long exhausting day. Went into the city to look at an apartment. Didn't like it. Blah.

  • Improbable – Old Spice Guy/Sassy Gay Friend – CRACK FIC

  • Fanart: Pretty pretty Inception

  • Inception in 30 seconds SPOILERS. (Last three links via [personal profile] onlybythenight)

  • Watched the first episode of BBC's new show, Sherlock. Wasn't so much a fan of it in the beginning, but it has brothers having ~*issues*~ which is a giant kink of mine, so I think I'll be watching more. I do have a gripe though.

The first episode has a lot of references to Sherlock and Watson being gay, but not in a subtext-y "Are they gay? I don't know! Maybe they are! Isn't all this gay subtext hilarious?" way, not unlike the Sherlock Holmes movie that came out in the US last Christmas. (Which is already problematic, but [personal profile] bookshop has already covered that ground.) No, in the BBC show it is explicitly addressed more than once and each time either Sherlock, Watson, or both outright state that they're not gay or that they are not interested.

Moffat has every right here to interpret the characters however he wants to. But the fact that he is working with a text that is canonically ambiguous on that point (I don't know if Doyle meant to have that kind of subtext, but it's there.) and the fact that he's going to such great lengths to edit out that possibility strikes me as... homophobic. Why is he so keen on dedicating screen time to reassuring us that that are not gay? None of those moments did anything for the plot or the characterization, except for perhaps when Sherlock commented that he was "married to [his] work". Is it so important that we know that they aren't interested in each other? Can't Moffat just write them in a way that doesn't imply a relationship. No, apparently he doesn't like the idea of viewers interpreting them as gay for each so much that he needs to interrupt the episode and directly tell us SHERLOCK AND WATSON ARE COMPLETELY HETEROSEXUAL. But it's all couched with lots of qualifiers like "But it would be completely okay" or "We get all sorts" and smiling brightly.

Moffat, I like you. I love what you've done with Doctor Who even if your run with Doctor Who has completely erased any acknowledgment that GLBTQ people exist, but right now you've completely earned it when I say "fuck you".

  • Lost my phone charger somewhere between Connecticut and Manhattan. (Don't ask me why I had it with me, long story.) Went straight to AT&T store to get a new one because I really need my cell phone. They didn't have the charger I need. Sent me to RadioShack across the street. They didn't have it either. AT&T store then sent me to another AT&T store on 43rd & Lexington. Turned out it was closed because they didn't fucking check the hours before they sent me traipsing all the way over there. Gave up in the end and went home. SIGH.

  • The company I bought my replacement laptop battery from less than eight months ago has agreed to replace my battery. I have to send my old one to them and pay for shipping for the new one, but it's better than buying a new one altogether. I doubt it will be quite that simple, this stuff usually requires at least three phone calls/emails ranging somewhere on the scale of firm to angry, but I expect I'll get a new battery in a few weeks.
