Something caught my attention while everybody was discussing the
fail and
more fail that was the J2 fic set in post-earthquake Haiti.
A lot of people seem especially angry that a writer appropriated a foreign culture and an enormous tragedy for the sake of
porn. Now. Appropriating the disaster for any reason that makes light of the enormity of the situation is terrible. Misrepresenting an entire race and culture is terrible. It is incredibly upsetting that somebody decided to make the deaths of thousands of people, particularly PoC, the backdrop for a completely unrelated story about two white guys. But the fact that it was
porn is not in and of itself bad. I am frustrated by the tone that I've seen people take implying that the porn makes it even worse.
I just want to get this out there:
Porn. Is. Not. Bad.There is nothing about porn that is inherently bad. Yes, porn can be degrading. Yes, porn can be insulting. But so can everything else. There is nothing inherently bad or crass or demeaning about porn.
Porn is part of our sexuality. Pornographic creative work can be just as beautiful, transgressive, creative, and brilliant as anything else. And it can be none of these things too. It can be nothing but dirty, sweaty fucking. And that is just a good. Porn doesn't need to be art to be valuable to us. It doesn't need to be couched in poetic language in order for it not to be insulting and crass. It just is and nobody should look down on it. By looking down on porn you are looking down on normal, healthy human desire. Plenty of people love porn, are even vocal about it, but still see it as being less or in some way unsuitable.
I am tired of being told that I need to be ashamed of my desires. I am tired of being told that I am sullying the subjects of porn. I am tired of porn being looked down on.
I am surprised to find in fandom of all communities anybody implying that porn has a particular quality of being degrading.
Again, I am not saying that the recent J2 fic is not insulting and out of line. There are so many problems with that fic. But pornographic content is not one of them. A story about Jared and Jensen searching for the meaning of life in Haiti would be just as offensive as a story about Jared and Jenson's epic love and boning.
