Blueberry Girl
Mar. 7th, 2009 08:48 pmI spent seven hours with Jennifer in Books of Wonder today waiting to get our books signed by Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess. While I am quite sure that Jennifer now wishes she could stab me in the face, we did eventually get our signatures (I was number 396 in line). The event was actually in honor of Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess' new children's book The Blueberry Girl so I got a copy just for the hell of it. (as if I can afford to buy things "just for the hell of it" haha... )
Now normally I don't like picture books. I do not like them at all. I did not like when I was a child. I went straight from the alphabet to chapter books, with a few road-signs in between. But Blueberry Girl? It is amazing. Charles Vess is, as usual, brilliant at illustrations, but the text is what blew me away. It is at once a fairy tale and a prayer, a wish and a blessing. It is meant for little children, for ones of the older variety, and just as much for parents. Blueberry Girl is a beautifully hopeful book. It's the sort of thing that will inspire every parent and every little blueberry girl.
