This book is not for the squeamish. Westerfeld has a brand new take on vampires, and these definitely don't sparkle. In fact, vampires are actually people that have been infected with parasites. Peeps is short of Parasite-Positive. Each chapter is prefaced by a graphic description of a real-life parasite, making the whole concept seem entirely too plausible.
Cal is a college freshman who was lucky enough to have a gene that made him immune to most of the negative effects of the parasite, so while he may be infected, he has retained his sanity and self control. His former girlfriends weren't so lucky. (The parasite is transmitted by exchanging bodily fluids) Now he's working for an underground government organization, hunting down his old lovers, now mere shells of their old selves. But when he finally zeroes in on the woman that infected him, he discovers that there's much more to the history of Peeps than he ever thought.
I haven't read a lot of Westerfeld, but he is swiftly becoming one of my favorites. He is fantastic with world building, nor does he ever skimp on plot or character. Peeps is perpetually high on the anti. It's well paced and keeps you on your toes. And I really appreciate how original it is, something I am becoming to associate with Westerfeld. Just keep in mind if you read this you'll be washing your hands every five minutes for a week or so.

Date: 2010-03-22 02:49 am (UTC)It's hella cool. You should check it out if you haven't already. The book's a little on the young side, and the mains are a little sue-ish, but I think you'd like Deryn (She's a cool girl! In a book!).
